CBT course: what to expect on the day

A CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) course is a one-day training course made up of five elements, A to E, finishing with at least 2 hours of riding on the road. There is no test. At Betta Biker in Warrington the bike and riding kit are supplied, and you finish with a CBT certificate valid for 2 years. The course costs £225, or £180 on your own bike.

What happens on a CBT course?

Every CBT in the UK follows the same five elements set by the DVSA. You move on to the next element only when your trainer is happy you have the skills from the last one.

  1. Element A: Introduction

An eyesight check (reading a number plate at 20.5 metres), then a chat about the aims of CBT, the kit you need and the legal requirements of riding.

  2. Element B: Practical on-site training

Getting to know the bike: the controls, safety checks, using the stand and wheeling the bike around without the engine running.

  3. Element C: Practical on-site riding

Riding off-road: moving off and stopping, slow control, figure of eight, braking and emergency stops, turning and using the gears.

  4. Element D: Practical on-road training

A classroom-style briefing on riding safely on the road: being seen, road positioning, anticipating hazards, speed and the Highway Code.

  5. Element E: Practical on-road riding

At least 2 hours riding on real roads with your trainer, using a radio, covering junctions, roundabouts, bends, hills and an emergency stop.

How much does a CBT cost?

A CBT with Betta Biker Rider Training in Warrington costs £225 with the bike and riding kit supplied, or £180 on your own bike. It is £125 when booked together with a DAS course. Not sure yet? A one-hour CBT taster session costs £65. See all prices.

What should I bring and wear?

  • Your provisional driving licence and a DVLA licence check code from gov.uk/view-driving-licence.
  • Glasses or contact lenses if you need them to read a number plate at 20.5 metres.
  • Sturdy over-the-ankle boots. Walking boots or Doc Martens are fine; trainers are not. No suitable boots? We can supply a pair.
  • Jeans or motorcycle trousers (not joggers or leggings) and warm layers. It gets cold on a bike, even in summer.

We supply a helmet, CE armoured jacket, waterproof over-trousers, gloves, hi-vis and boots if you do not have your own, along with the bike.

How can I prepare?

Brush up on the Highway Code, and try the free DVSA RideFree e-learning to get a head start on the classroom parts.

What happens after CBT?

You can ride a motorcycle or scooter up to 125cc on L plates for 2 years. To ride without L plates, carry a passenger or use motorways, take your full licence. Read how to get a motorcycle licence or see our DAS course.

Common questions

Can you fail a CBT?

There is no pass or fail. If your trainer is not yet happy that you are safe to ride alone, you may need more training before they issue your certificate.

Do I need to know the Highway Code for CBT?

Yes. You will not be formally tested, but you need an up-to-date understanding of the Highway Code to ride safely on the road during Element E.
